TL;DR Summary:
Starting Rank Matters: Negative results are far easier to suppress when they begin below the top three, while a No. 1 ranking usually demands a longer campaign.Placement Beats Volume: Publishing more content does not guarantee success; campaigns work when enough positive assets reach Google’s top 10.Expect Three To Four Months: Most successful campaigns clear Page 1 within four months, but older news, reviews, Reddit threads, and complaint pages can take much longer.Page Two Still Surfaces: Google’s AI Overviews can cite results ranked below Page 1, making AI citation monitoring essential even after a negative link is pushed down. How long does it take to remove negative search results from Google? A review of 714 suppression campaigns run between August 2024 and May 2026 found that the answer depends less on how much content you publish and more on where the negative result sits when you start. That finding matters now because AI Overviews pull from far more than the first page of results, which changes what a suppression campaign needs to accomplish.
Starting Position Drives Every Suppression Campaign Outcome
The review covered 2,461 negative results across the 714 campaigns. In 43% of campaigns, a negative result held the No. 1 spot before work began. In 75%, at least one negative ranked in the top three. Campaigns whose worst negative started at position 4 or lower cleared Page 1 about 3.5 times as often as campaigns starting at No. 1. Campaigns starting at No. 2 or No. 3 cleared about twice as often. If your worst result sits at No. 1, plan for a longer, harder suppression campaign than someone starting at No. 5.
Volume Doesn’t Win Suppression Campaigns, Placement Does
The typical campaign published 29 positive assets, about 10 a month. Campaigns that cleared Page 1 published a median of 28 assets, almost identical to the 29 published by campaigns that didn’t clear. The real difference was placement. Cleared campaigns landed a median of six new assets in the top 10, compared with four for campaigns that fell short. Track how many assets reach the top 10 each month. Counting total assets published tells you little about whether a suppression campaign is working.
Timelines for Suppression Campaigns Cluster Around Three to Four Months
Among campaigns that cleared Page 1, 40% did so by month two, 63% by month three, and 85% by month four. A separate set of 46 documented cases showed a median of four months, though one case took 16 months. Court records, mugshots, and arrest sites came down fastest. Reddit threads, review sites, and complaint profiles proved hardest to move. National news outlets were slightly harder to push down than local ones. A Justice Department press release review of 25 cases found that pages at least nine years old left Page 1 nearly five times as often as pages five years old or newer. Age works in your favor. Newer negatives take longer to shift.
Why Page 2 No Longer Ends a Suppression Campaign
A March study by Ahrefs looked at 4 million AI Overview citations across 863,000 keyword searches. Only 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10 for that search. Another 31.2% ranked between positions 11 and 100. This happens because Google runs related searches behind the scenes, a process Ahrefs calls “fan-out,” and pulls source pages from those results. Most negatives in the documented cases landed on Page 2, which used to be the finish line for suppression. That page can still feed an AI Overview. This is exactly why suppression teams can no longer treat Page 1 as the finish line; a tool like AI Mentions lets you see which specific URLs AI tools are actually citing for a given name, so you know whether a buried negative is still surfacing in AI-generated answers. If your suppression campaign stops at Page 2, check monthly which URLs AI tools cite for the name in question, and push the hardest negatives further down.
What to Watch Next
Before committing to a timeline, find out how many negatives sit on Page 1, where the worst one ranks, and what type of content each one is. Removal works faster for court records and mugshots, so pursue that route first when it’s available. For everything else, plan three to four months, track top-10 placements monthly, and add AI citation checks to that same report. To catch this in practice, a tool like AI Mentions can show exactly which sources ChatGPT and Claude cite for a name, making it easier to spot when a suppressed negative is still feeding an AI answer.
